Highly impressive! Thank you for taking the time to break these things down into digestible pieces AND to put them where we can point to them in the future. I'm going to review, reflect, and then respond further. Thanks!

Stephen:

Great topic! I have already posted my comments on NASA's idea site here: http://opennasa.ideascale.com/a/dtd/33386-7044 and have a slightly windier version here: http://bartacus.blogspot.com/2010/02/collaborative-government-and-space-in.html

My comments generally apply to your point about "keeping the investors happy." If you have any thoughts about the posting, I'd be happy to hear them.

Salud,

This is excellent. I'm hopeful we'll start seeing concrete examples of what you've described. I especially found useful the suggestion that we create a process to share information on projects via academic publications. That may very well be what shifts the paradigm a bit. I'm not sure the science community takes seriously public participation (or wants it) so the vision of one of them opening a favorite journal only to find an article about research spawned by someone from the great unwashed masses is a hoot!
